Hi,

I am a developer using vala and lua.

Currently, to make a vala/lua program buildable in debian, ugly means must be used.

I strongly recommend that debian use 'lua' as pc name, just the same with other distos.
Or as Enrico Tassi said, use a symbol link.

Since a pkg has both pc name and pc version and lua official use 'lua' as pc name, I don't think pc name lua5.1 any good. "5.1" should be written in pc version.
Debian is making things 'debian-only', really bad.

In case a program requires too old lua to build, it should carry lua source of that version itself, which is the recommended way. In fact, lua is designed flexible and hackable
and using a modified version of lua should be common.

If debian insists 'lua5.1' as pc name, debian should also patch vala to let
it support debian's lua5.1 pc name seamlessly.
