It is fixed in version 3.1.1-1 but the lenny version unfortunately needs to use a workaround. Usually the maintainer scripts would call the following command: dpkg-statoverride --update --add smsd smsd 0755 /var/log/smstools/smsd_stats That didn't happen in this case. You can either call this command or use the chown call as Kristinn suggested.
