That was pure luck (or bad luck), then. edos-distcheck completely ignores the architecture field, and the implicit conflict between packages of different architectures. In principle we could introduce conflicts between all packages of different architectures. This would be very inefficient. It is much better to use a trivial grep-dctrl script to separate different architecures.
