Package: bash
Version: 4.1-3
Severity: normal

In interactive shells, bash attempts to do history expansion for the
"!" in "$!" when followed by a non-space.

This works:

% echo & echo $!

This also works:

% echo & echo $! ; echo

But this one gives an error:

% echo & echo $!; echo
-bash: !: event not found

This is particularly annoying if you typed a longer command
containing "$!", since it's not kept in the history (cf. #510622),
so it can't be easily edited to insert a space.
