I'm not sure the exact process to do that,
I've added init=/bin/bash at the end of the grub line
I got a prompt
I cannot switch to another console because there is only one console
this way so I've entered:

/etc/rcS/S02udev start &
then
ps axf

I got
[ .. some missing lines ... ]
\_ [hd-audio0]
\_ [hd-audio0]
/bin/bash
/bin/sh -e /etc/rcS.d/S02udev start
    \_ udevadm settle
udevd --daemon
 \_ udevd --daemon
     \_/bin/sh /lib/udev/gpsd.hotplug.wrapper
        \_sleep 1

lots of

\_ udevd --daemon

/bin/sh -e /lib/udev/net.agent
  \_ sleep 1
/bin/sh -e /lib/udev/alsa-utils
  \_ sleep 1
/bin/sh -e /lib/udev/alsa-utils
  \_ sleep 1

I've then purged the gpsd package and rebooted and everythingn went fine
