I looked over the syslinux Debian and > upstream changelogs, but nothing jumps out at me. > > Our other hosts run KVM 85 or qemu-kvm 0.11.1+dfsg-1. They had been fine > with pxelinux 3.63 or 3.71 (we PXE boot nearly all our new VMs for OS > installation). FWIW, they also seem to be fine with 3.86. Yes, it appears that (at least) 3.86+ works just fine, as is 4.0 versions. And yes, 3.71 from lenny does not work. Also, when replacing boot roms with the ones from gpxe-1.0, they also work. Note that upstream qemu-kvm ships with boot roms (blobs) built from gpxe, not from etherboot. So it must be some change introduced in etherboot or qemu(-kvm) that triggered a bug in pxelinux, which were fixed in both pxelinux and later gpxe... Which one - it is difficult to say so far... We're going to switch to gpxe for next version (when it will be available on debian) - and the bug will be fixed at that time for sure. Maybe I'll find ways to track it down before, but I can't promise obviously. Note that I lower the severity from important to minor, because the problem only affects old versions of pxelinux and is easy to fix (or work around if you wish) by updating pxelinux. Note also that I retitled the bug, removing reference to VNC: it does not depend on vnc at all, the same happens with vga console as well. Note also that this bug is _not_ fixed by recent fixes for ps2 port that went into seabios in 0.12.5+dfsg-1 debian release of qemu-kvm.
