I've been making several changes with the goal of bringing VTK into the modern world of versioned installations. The upcoming VTK 5.0 release does have full soname versioning when building with shared libraries. It also has fully configurable install locations so that the libraries, executables, cmake packaging, Tcl wrappers, python wrappers, etc. can all be configured to go to specific places.

If there are further troubles with smoothly creating a Debian package out of the 5.0 release please post to the VTK developers list:
