I have just upgraded to 0.8.7g-1, backed up the DB before doing so then did the web interface upgrade steps, it said there was no SQL upgrade. And it is still happily graphing. So I am guessing your problem is probably with cacti-spine (that I am not using). Different bug if you ask me.
