Hi,

I've made a 32-bit squeeze VE and was able to reproduce this issue straight away.

I thought Soeren was experiencing the bug on amd64 because that was mentioned in the 'reportbug' output in the initial report. If this bug is really specific to a 32-bit userland then that could be why it hasn't affected any of my OpenVZ VE's (which were all amd64). I don't think the kernel's version or architecture will matter in this case.

python-apt 0.7.96.1 works fine, but is only installable with older packages apt-utils 0.7.25.3 and apt 0.7.25.3

If I upgrade to python-apt 0.7.97.1, which requires newer apt-utils 0.8.0 and apt 0.8.0, the segfault happens quite consistently when trying to upgrade any package. An easy way to trigger this is to downgrade something older version, eg. tzdata 2010k-1, and then it will try (and fail) to upgrade to the latest version from testing.

All of these old package versions can be found on snapshots.debian.org

I'll take a look at the python-apt 0.7.96.1 and 0.7.97.1 sources and rebuild each on my own system to see if I can work out where the bug was introduced.

There was a 0.7.97 version in between but it seems that FTBFS on i386, hence 0.7.97.1 replaced it the same day. I may take a look at that too in case the fix for that issue is somehow related to this segfault.
