I confirm, there are indeed some problems with vertical panels, even with metacity as a window manager. The workspace switcher is barely usable (thin vertical bars). Then, if I kill gnome-panel (or restart the session), the workspace switcher just disappears from the screen (1280x800). Setting the panel back to horizontal mode makes it appear again...
