Hello, there is a bug in grub2 which is related to locale settings, it makes unusable an already working grub2. My LANG is set to fr_FR.utf8 On some Squeeze installs, doing an update-grub2 with this kind of LANG crashs Grub2. update-grub2 runs fine without complain, but at boot time, Grub2 fails without error message and reboot the pc. If I boot with another bootloader then I run update-grub2 again, but with LANG=C, Grub2 runs fine. If I use apt-get to install a kernel related package which the post-inst script does an update-grub2, I have to do a 'LANG=C update-grub2' to repair my Grub2. If I forget to do it, the pc will be unable to boot the next time. This bug does not appear each time I install a Squeeze distro, I don't know how to reproduce it on any squeeze, but it's locale related, sure. I'm not the only one experiencing this bug. There is another one also using a LANG!=C (french readers could read his investigations on http://linuxfr.org/forums/15/29314.html ). I don't know if it is related, but we are both using /boot in an raid1. I have my /boot inside an lvm inside a raid1 partition, but the other guy has put his /boot without lvm, directly into a raid1 partition. -- Thomas DEBESSE -- Package-specific info: *********************** BEGIN /proc/mounts /dev/mapper/cotinus--vg-cotinus--disk / ext4 rw,relatime,errors=remount-ro,barrier=1,data=ordered 0 0 *********************** END /proc/mounts *********************** BEGIN /boot/grub/device.map (hd0) /dev/disk/by-id/ata-MAXTOR_STM3500320AS_9QM9TSTQ *********************** END /boot/grub/device.map *********************** BEGIN /boot/grub/grub.cfg # # DO NOT EDIT THIS FILE # # It is automatically generated by grub-mkconfig using templates # from /etc/grub.d and settings from /etc/default/grub # ### BEGIN /etc/grub.d/00_header ### if [ -s $prefix/grubenv ]; then load_env fi set default="0" if [ "${prev_saved_entry}" ]; then set saved_entry="${prev_saved_entry}" save_env saved_entry set prev_saved_entry= save_env prev_saved_entry set boot_once=true fi function savedefault { if [ -z "${boot_once}" ]; then saved_entry="${chosen}" save_env saved_entry fi } function load_video { insmod vbe insmod vga insmod video_bochs insmod video_cirrus } insmod raid insmod mdraid insmod lvm insmod part_msdos insmod ext2 set root='(cotinus-vg-cotinus-disk)' search --no-floppy --fs-uuid --set ddb5f053-64c7-48fa-8715-33ede3eb6128 if loadfont /usr/share/grub/unicode.pf2 ; then set gfxmode=640x480 load_video insmod gfxterm fi terminal_output gfxterm insmod raid insmod mdraid insmod lvm insmod part_msdos insmod ext2 set root='(cotinus-vg-cotinus-disk)' search --no-floppy --fs-uuid --set ddb5f053-64c7-48fa-8715-33ede3eb6128 set locale_dir=($root)/boot/grub/locale set lang=fr insmod gettext set timeout=5 ### END /etc/grub.d/00_header ### ### BEGIN /etc/grub.d/05_debian_theme ### set menu_color_normal=cyan/blue set menu_color_highlight=white/blue ### END /etc/grub.d/05_debian_theme ### ### BEGIN /etc/grub.d/10_linux ### menuentry 'Debian GNU/Linux, avec Linux 2.6.32-5-686' --class debian --class gnu-linux --class gnu --class os { insmod raid insmod mdraid insmod lvm insmod part_msdos insmod ext2 set root='(cotinus-vg-cotinus-disk)' search --no-floppy --fs-uuid --set ddb5f053-64c7-48fa-8715-33ede3eb6128 echo 'Chargement de Linux 2.6.32-5-686 ...' linux /boot/vmlinuz-2.6.32-5-686 root=/dev/mapper/cotinus--vg-cotinus--disk ro quiet echo 'Chargement du disque mémoire initial ...' initrd /boot/initrd.img-2.6.32-5-686 } menuentry 'Debian GNU/Linux, avec Linux 2.6.32-5-686 (mode de dépannage)' --class debian --class gnu-linux --class gnu --class os { insmod raid insmod mdraid insmod lvm insmod part_msdos insmod ext2 set root='(cotinus-vg-cotinus-disk)' search --no-floppy --fs-uuid --set ddb5f053-64c7-48fa-8715-33ede3eb6128 echo 'Chargement de Linux 2.6.32-5-686 ...' linux /boot/vmlinuz-2.6.32-5-686 root=/dev/mapper/cotinus--vg-cotinus--disk ro single echo 'Chargement du disque mémoire initial ...' initrd /boot/initrd.img-2.6.32-5-686 } ### END /etc/grub.d/10_linux ### ### BEGIN /etc/grub.d/20_linux_xen ### ### END /etc/grub.d/20_linux_xen ### ### BEGIN /etc/grub.d/30_os-prober ### ### END /etc/grub.d/30_os-prober ### ### BEGIN /etc/grub.d/40_custom ### # This file provides an easy way to add custom menu entries.
