I also experienced this bug. I am running Squeeze, and on performing a safe-upgrade I experienced exactly the same symptoms. I managed to get a working system by following the suggested workaround (suggested by OP that is).

I asked for help in Debian help forums and had no reply, asked on Linuxquestions, no reply. Eventually I tried the suggestion to update initramfs, but obviously did something wrong and ended up with a completely unbootable system.

I had to wipe it and reinstall in the end. Sorry can't provide more details but I don't have the time to try to reproduce it. It is a nasty bug though clearly so I thought I should at least register my experience.
