This problem happened again on the next kernel upgrade. I did the following steps:
  1) turn on computer
  2) upgrade everything except kernel and grub
  3) reboot (this worked fine)
  4) upgrade just kernel
  5) reboot. This did not work.  As before the display showed
     'GRUB' after the BIOS and no more.

As before I used a livecd and a chroot to re-run 'grub-install --force' and the system then rebooted happily.
