Allow me to mention that this is rather a flaw in c-ares than in curl. c-ares just don't emulate/provide a good enough getaddrinfo() function yet with a set of mixed v4/v6 addresses. (Patches are welcome.)

This is one of the reasons Fedora reverted their choice to use curl built with c-ares and you can find a few other reasons too by asking the curl team or googling.
