This bug has been fixed with upstream support available in 5.3.x and later.
There's no reason to beat a dead horse. Support for bundled GD will not be enabled in lenny (it's not even possible since lenny gets only security updates) and unstable/squeeze is already using new php5-gd module which can use external libgd and still provide extra functionality (thanks to Pierre). So please keep yourself from sending "me too" emails. O.
