I hadn't ever used it before but I just tested it on my machine. But if it isn't working for you then you might wish to poke at the notify-send program as a debugging aide. The notify-send program generates the same type of desktop notifications as leave message. If that isn't working then it would be an easier to debug there and closer to the problem.
