Thanks for the explanations. I see there is a build problem in <https://buildd.debian.org/fetch.cgi?&pkg=distcc&ver=3.1-3.2&arch=hurd-i386&stamp=1291631237&file=log> and specifically that PATH_MAX is not defined on Hurd, at least in the headers distcc includes. It seems probably fairly easy to fix upstream if someone cares to try.
