I installed the scim and scim-gtk2-immodule version 1.4.1-1 (powerpc). This removed scim-chinese 0.4.2, and I could run synaptic without problem. scim 1.4 needs the new IM engine scim-pinyin (scim-chinese renames to scim-pinyin after 0.4.2) which is not yet in unstable. I installed scim-pinyin 0.5.91 from source. Now scim and synaptic work fine without problem.
