Package: man-db Version: 2.5.7-4 Severity: wishlist I install the POSIX man pages so I can program portably. I want to see foo(3posix) before foo(2). I am just trying to work out whether this makes me unusual (and I should just use MANSECT), or whether I’m justified in filing a bug report. I think the latter: the general idea of the default man page section ordering seems to be that higher-level content is shown before lower-level, so, user programs (1) before administrator utilities (8), libc (3) before kernel (2); and hence, it seems to me, POSIX (3posix) should come before both sections 2 and 3.
However, I would not go so far as to suggest that 1posix should come before 1: here, a different argument seems to apply: that it is the actual utilities being described, and users are most interested in those. It is mostly developers who need to know the POSIX spec for userspace programs, and as in this case users trump developers, so 1posix is trumped by 1. -- System Information: Debian Release: squeeze/sid APT prefers maverick-updates APT policy: (500, 'maverick-updates'), (500, 'maverick-security'), (500, 'maverick-backports'), (500, 'maverick') Architecture: i386 (i686) Kernel: Linux 2.6.35-24-generic (SMP w/2 CPU cores) Locale: LANG=en_GB.UTF-8, LC_CTYPE=en_GB.UTF-8 (charmap=UTF-8) Shell: /bin/sh linked to /bin/dash Versions of packages man-db depends on: ii bsdmainutils 8.0.11ubuntu1 collection of more utilities from ii debconf [debconf 1.5.32ubuntu3 Debian configuration management sy ii dpkg 1.15.8.4ubuntu3.1 Debian package management system ii groff-base 1.20.1-10 GNU troff text-formatting system ( ii libc6 2.12.1-0ubuntu10.1 Embedded GNU C Library: Shared lib ii libgdbm3 1.8.3-9 GNU dbm database routines (runtime ii zlib1g 1:1.2.3.4.dfsg-3ubuntu1 compression library - runtime man-db recommends no packages.
