according to debian/autoreconf.*, the files under .git/ are considered. That's a waste of time and I/O, since those files are irrelevant to the autoreconf process. As far as I'm concerned, I'd be happy if it would ignore .git/ entirely, but some might want to have other $VCS ignored as well.
