Removing conky from Debian, making it non-free, and then adding it to the contrib repository was a poor decision. Making a non-free package is one thing, some people find them useful, and sometimes they make the free stuff more accessible. But removing free software from Debian to replace it with something non-free goes against the whole point of Debian, which is to provide a free software system.
