I _think_ the problem is that log messages sent to /dev/log have a zero character on the end, but the code has been like that for a long time and I've never seen this effect before. What log daemon are you using? Maybe it's an interaction with an unusual logger? Can you build a package from source, or install a .i386 deb if I send you some test code?
