Per the upstream bug report, this is fixed in kernel commit aaa3d08c357dcfbe13ec23786c294759183a4d8d, which is included in 2.6.38-rc6. Apparently the new nouveau took advantage of a broken kernel feature or something like that -- I'm not really sure of the details, so I don't know whether you also want to fix it in xserver-xorg-video-nouveau.
