Even if it's 8 steps, it's rather easy:
a.) a bug should be filed about the issue in the BTS
b.) the BTS should have the patch
c.) the fix should be in unstable/testing
d.) you send mail to debian-release@l.d.o asking for permission to upload the
fix to stable-proposed-updates.
f.) stable release managers (SRMs) give permission to upload
f.) you (well, I) upload
g.) SRMs move the package into stable-updates (formerly known as volatile)
h.) upon a point release, the package is moved from stable-updates to stable
A slightly different but mostly similar route exists via security-updates.
And, only bugs of severity important and higher and with a straightforward
patch are accceptable for this. IMO this _bug_ qualifies, I _guess_ the patch
too, but I'm not a SRM :-)
