Standard Gnome desktop so thats the metacity window manager I believe.

Hmm, that's strange. I already tried moving my ~/.config/vlc/
config directory out of the way, and that didn't help.
I'm a reasonably advanced coder and also a DM so I know how to
build packages etc. Is there anything you'd like me to try?
