I can't test this anymore, since I have only one hd left, but in retrospective I think you're right. Just one other thing: If grub is to be installed on the MBR on /dev/hdb, maybe d-i should be smart enough to guess, that /dev/hdb is hd0 at boot time and should rewrite /boot/grub/device.map.
