After conferring with upstream, the problem that you ran into with 1.4 is
at least related to the problem with sparc64 and was indeed fixed in 1.6.
The problem you ran into building 1.6 was a different problem (a syntax
error that had gone unnoticed), and is now fixed in the version in
experimental.  Thank you very much for letting us know!  The experimental
version should now build, and I expect it to be uploaded to unstable
before much longer.
