this appears to require a perl module not yet available in debian:

checking for perl module Sys::Mmap... no
configure: error: zm requires Sys::Mmap for mapped memory
make: *** [config.status] Error 1

until that is available, we could ship an /etc/sysctl.d if we can come up with 
some sane default values, and document the problem in README.Debian...
