Another possibility is that pcscd is actually needed for libpcsclite1
to perform as advertised. In that case, the dependency of wpasupplicant
on it would be a bug, and the lack of a lighter-weight library that
can deal with configurations with and without pcscd would be a bug.

libpcsclite1 can't be used without pcscd. So, as you wrote, it is a
bug of wpasupplicant. That is why I reassign it to wpasupplicant.

You could also have a look at wpasupplicant bug #612842
http://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=612842 about the
exact same issue.

Thanks for explaining. I think there must be a miscommunication between
the two package maintainers, so I'm reassigning the bug to both packages
(meaning either could fix it).

"What is the impact?" you might wonder. Most high-level package
managers install Recommends by default unless you turn off the
Recommends facility completely. This is not a bug in the package
managers; that's how it's supposed to work.

The Recommends relation is exactly what I (pcsc-lite maintainer)
want: install pcscd by default when libpcsclite1 is installed, but
allow the admin to remove pcscd if really needed.

If you do not want to have pcscd installed in your system then just
remove it.

No, I want Debian not to be buggy.

You think it is a bug.
I think it is not a bug.

How do you propose to solve this "bug"?
What would be OK for you as a solution?
