Package: sun-java6-fonts Version: 6.25-1 Severity: wishlist Usertags: defoma-removal
As found in a test in Bug #620385 [1], with minimal test program in [2], both sun-java6 and openjdk VM seem to be able to access fontconfig fonts without defoma support. [1] http://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=620385#25 [2] http://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=620385#35 Previously, the defoma hint was misunderstood to be needed for Thai Java app users, as some Java widgets appear to hard-code Lucida font for Thai rendering, which is only provided by sun-java6-fonts. But the tests above found that merely installing the font files in ~/.fonts without defoma hint also works. So, the hint can probably be dropped if no non-Java apps are found to rely on it. Instead, it can be converted to fontconfig snippet. Note that defoma is to be removed as a proposed release goal [3].
