I have been looking into this; that is, I think I have gone down two blind alleys :-)

Unfortunately, given that the latest data on this is now over two years old, and the URLs are stale, I am nearly certain I cannot duplicate the exact problem. So, I am left to find a current test case. Looking at http://piuparts.debian.org/sid/, I am not certain where to start. So, if anyone can provide input re:

1) How likely/possible is it that this was a bug in apt two years ago that has been subsequently fixed ?

I note that, in the example above, debconf is a virtual package. Current aptitude/apt-get appears to generate error (even with APT::Get::Assume-Yes), when a virtual package is selected for install. So, either: a) the piuparts code to select the proper "specific package for virtual package depends" is broken, or b) apt operated differently in the past; i.e. it would "auto-magically select", or
c) I am more confused than even I thought.

2) Is there a specfic package, or even a specific category on http://piuparts.debian.org/ that I can review to troubleshoot further ?
