I showed the bug report to the upstream developer and got this:

==========================================

Thanks !
The bug was still there - quite hidden in the compilation directives of
libpnmrw.c - it's actually more of a compilation bug than a coding bug.
If you happen to release a 2.7.8 Debian package, especially for ia64 or
amd64, you should definitely include that patch.

[Note : I wouldn't have realized this since I usually don't have a 64 bit
machine at hand. It's great that the Debian people support so many
architectures... ]

Bad news is that I was informed by other sources of further remaining bugs in 2.7.8 (in spite of all efforts which went into the 2.7.x series...) Nevertheless 2.7.8 is probably the current best version, as far as I know these bugs occur only in unusual circumstances (and have been there probably for a long time, anyway). Of course, at some point, 2.7.9 will correct these issues.

=========================================================================

So I am including the patch in creating the 2.7.8 package.

However, I am unsure when it will be uploaded and equally unsure as to what it
means for the Sarge release.
