Package: erc Version: 5.3-1 Severity: normal I connect to freenode.net using M-x erc-tls. I accept irc.freenode.net for the IRC server, change the port to 6697, enter my user name and leave the password blank (I've configured automatic identification to NickServ). It connects fine and just works.
Then, when my ISP resets my Internet connection (once every 2 days), I want ERC to automatically reconnect. It does seem to try that, but it doesn't succeed. Instead it repeats the following message every minute while the connection is down, and a few dozen times every 4 minutes when the network connection is back up. Connection failed! Re-establishing connection... >From when the message first shows up, Emacs no longer responds to input (e.g. C-x C-c, C-x b). The only input that has any effect C-g C-g, which stops the Emacs job and gives control back to Bash. (I should mention that I'm new to Emacs and only know a few commands and key combinations.) When I get the process back with 'fg' it first asks "Auto-save? (y or n)" to which I answer "n". Then it asks "Abort (and dump core)? (y or n)" to which I answer "y" (because with "n" it says "Continuing..." and just hangs there). It exits with the message "Fatal error (6)Aborted", followed by any showing the keys I may have pressed while it was "re-establishing connection". -- System Information: Debian Release: 6.0.1 Architecture: i386 (i686) Kernel: Linux 2.6.38.6-libre-planet (SMP w/1 CPU core) Locale: LANG=C, LC_CTYPE=C (charmap=ANSI_X3.4-1968) Shell: /bin/sh linked to /bin/dash Versions of packages erc depends on: ii emacs23-nox [emacsen] 23.2+1-7 The GNU Emacs editor (without X su ii emacsen-common 1.4.22 Common facilities for all emacsen ii make 3.81-8 An utility for Directing compilati erc recommends no packages.
