Well, I'm afraid I'm going to have to give up my goal of producing a perfectly working fix and just publish what I have so far. I have been able to get a stable interlaced display, but it is only showing the even numbered lines (or the odd numbered lines, depending on whether you start numbering the lines with 0 or 1). I feel certain that there's more work to be done on drivers/gpu/drm/drm_irq.c, but I do not understand the design well enough to be able to make further progress. I hope that a kernel guru can take over from here and make it work correctly.
Here is my partial fix: http://users.wowway.com/~zlinuxman/kernel/interlace.diff I used kernel 2.6.38 as my code base. -- .''`.
