Subject says it all. Specifically: I have my debian packages in a svn repository, but prefer to run dpkg-buildpackage manually inside that directory, rather than using something like svn-buildpackage. For that, I tried to use dpkg-buildpackage -I.svn to make sure these .svn directories don't get included in the package.
