If you're running pulseaudio did you controled your sound with a
tool like pavucontrol?

I don't use pulseaudio.
Start alsamixer in a terminal, press<F4> and check wether all
controls for recording are unmuted and select your recording
channel.

in alsamixer digital channel was on zero level...
after rising it up external microphone begin working.
but internal (built-in) microphone doesn't works at all.
I will try to disassemble notebook and check connection of cables, but
on windows, more than year ago built in microphone worked...
