It doesn't do that here.  It opens
/usr/lib/i386-linux-gnu/libgailutil.so.18.

Which it should be able to find if your system gone through the
multiarch transition correctly.  Does
«cat /etc/ld.so.conf.d/i486-linux-gnu.conf» have a line that says
“/usr/lib/i386-linux-gnu”?  What version of libgail18 do you have
installed?
