I used git bisect to track down the faulty commit and it looks like it's due do aba809cf57681285888f1500658823adffc6df14: commenting out the call to gdk_draw_pixbuf() and commenting the "fix" which used Cairo instead fixed the problem for me. It looks like the port from Gtk 2 to Gtk 3 is not perfect yet.
