I just tried to reproduce this problem with current swig on my Debian unstable system (amd64):
octave:1> version ans = 3.2.4 octave:2> pkg load ftp warning: You have loaded the ftp package. A call to "clear -all" from now on will make Octave crash. You have been warned. octave:3> clear -all octave:4> No idea what fixed it seems to be working now...
