Sorry for the long silence. Alas, I can't reproduce it:
# mkfifo /tmp/fifo
# su nobody -c src/dash
$ echo aaaa >/tmp/fifo
src/dash: cannot create /tmp/fifo: Permission denied
$ echo $?
2
$ exit
