I hadn't planned on it since this is more of a leaf package, which won't have a too large of an impact if it ends up removed. However, I just decided to look if it were an easy fix, and it looks like it's not. On a quick glance, it looks like freetype is already being linked in (via -lfreetype), but then again there is explicit code that includes t1lib.h. I'm not sure if that's easily removable. I would do more to help, but I just don't have a lot of time to spend on this. I would suggest talking to your upstream to determine whether they handle freetype only, and if not pester them to do that.
