when building recent kernels with kernel-package (3.x, don't know about 2.6.x) dkms fails later on building external kernel modules (virtualbox-dkms in my case). >From the relevant dkms logfiles I learnt that the files relevant include directory /usr/src/linux-headers-<kernelversion>/arch/x86/include is missing. Copying this directory from the kernel sourcetree fixes this issue and virtualbox modules get build fine.
