Just an update -- somebody put me on to Virtual Box, and it works! It's free for non-commercial use, and has allowed me to bypass this problem completely. I could install directly off the weekly build ISO file without needing to burn a CD, and use the default installation, and everything ran without a hitch.

Having Debian running as a guest OS makes it trivial to switch between systems without any dual-booting hassles.

So for anybody wanting to run both OSX and Debian on a new iMac, I'd recomment this route.

Cheers, Mike.
