I don't think they need to be command-line compatible in order to be
alternatives, see editor or x-www-browser, for example. Their
configurations should still be kept separated.

The main usefulness I see is to make scripts and other stuff that run
"mplayer" work whether you have mplayer, mplayer2 or both installed
without editing the script or making a symlink by hand.
