The completion of dpkg --purge doesn't seem to include non-purged but removed packages. E.g. $ dpkg -l | grep libv8 [redacted] rc libv8-3.4.14.13 ii libv8-3.4.14.21 $ dpkg --purge libv8\t[auto completed: -3.4.14.21] Package libv8-3.4.14.13 should also be available as a possible completion.
