Have you tried the documented way in /usr/share/doc/gnome-session/README.Debian by setting WINDOW_MANAGER to your preferred choice (eg via ~/.gnomerc)? -- Why is it that all of the instruments seeking intelligent life in the universe are pointed away from Earth?
