Actually "textread" is no longer part of the "io" package as of version
1.0.14, so what you observe is normal.

This function was present in version 1.0.12 of the package. But it was
removed because "textread" is now included in Octave 3.4.

The problem here is that Octave 3.4 is not yet packaged in Debian. As a
consequence, there is currently no version of "textread" in Debian
unstable. We probably should have packaged Octave 3.4 before io 1.0.14.

A workaround is probably to downgrade to version 1.0.12 of octave-io,
available there: http://packages.debian.org/squeeze/octave-io

We should close this bug when Octave 3.4 is packaged.

Best,
