One more thing I forgot, could you also test an older version of the
drivers? You will need to install them from snapshot.debian.org:

Add a line to your apt sources.list:

echo deb http://snapshot.debian.org/archive/debian/20091229T215155Z/ unstable 
main >> /etc/apt/sources.list

Update apt, ignoring the expired apt metadata:

apt-get -o 'Acquire::Check-Valid-Until=false' update

Install the old drivers:

apt-get install libgl1-mesa-glx=7.6.1-1

If you have any other libgl1-mesa-* packages installed, also install
version 7.6.1-1 of them using the same syntax above.

Then check if cultivation works.

Then delete the snapshot line from your sources.list and update and
upgrade apt.
