I applied 5629fba80b05cc906c45e62c397d18e5afa18636 to wheezy's 1.4.25-2 and the resulting binary fixed the problems I was having, when run with buffer_mail=on in ~/.msmtprc. (Without buffer_mail=on, the problem came back, so the test is sound.)
