I didn't saw your problem when I did test 2.59 because I was able to grab
the default cube.

Similar problem i had in blender 2.49, and blender 2.61 downloaded from

Can you try to backup and delete your personal ~/.blender directory and try
running blender again.
If it doesn't work, I'll need more details about your issue by running the
following commands:
  blender -d
  blender -d --factory-startup

There are also some issues with OpenGL driver and it may be worth to run
blender without GLSL support:
  blender -d -noglsl
